What to check on a clothing care label before washing

Two garments that look similar can need different care. Fibre blends, trims, linings and finishes all matter. Before the first wash, find the care label and read the instructions for the whole garment. If the label is missing or unclear, ask the retailer rather than testing a method on the entire item.

Check the full sequence

Do not stop after finding a washing temperature. Look for instructions on bleaching, tumble drying, natural drying, ironing and professional cleaning too. A permitted wash does not mean every drying method is suitable.

Separate what must be treated differently

Sort by the care requirements as well as colour. Close fastenings where appropriate, check pockets and look for anything that could catch on other garments. Delicate details may need different handling from a plain item, even if the main fabric looks the same.

A cooler wash is not a universal answer

Choosing a lower temperature does not make a machine cycle suitable for a garment labelled for hand washing or professional care. Movement, spin and detergent also affect the result. Use the method specified on the label and follow your machine and detergent instructions.

Plan the drying step before washing

Make sure you have the space and equipment the garment needs. If the label calls for flat drying, prepare a suitable surface. Do not assume a tumble dryer is safe because an item looks sturdy. Avoid hanging a wet garment in a way that stretches it.

Deal with stains carefully

Check the label and the stain-removal product instructions before treatment. If a method is permitted, test it in an inconspicuous area first. Rubbing, heat or an unsuitable cleaner can make matters worse. For a valuable or difficult item, ask a professional cleaner.

Keeping a photo of the care label can help if it becomes hard to read later. See our clothing care guide for a short routine you can return to before washing and storing your clothes.
