How to check clothing fit before ordering online

A familiar size label is a useful starting point, but it is not a guarantee that two garments will fit the same way. A better decision combines the size chart, the garment’s shape and a comparison with something you already like wearing.

Find out what the chart measures

Body measurements describe the person a size is intended to fit. Garment measurements describe the actual item. A flat chest width is not the same as a full bust circumference. If the chart does not explain the difference, ask before comparing numbers.

Measure a useful reference piece

Choose a similar garment from your wardrobe, lay it flat without stretching it and measure the points described in the product information. For a top, chest width and length may be helpful. For trousers, look at the waist, hips, rise and inside-leg length if those measurements are available. Compare like with like rather than assuming every brand measures in the same way.

Think about how the garment is supposed to sit

An oversized top needs a different comparison from a close-fitting one. Extra room can be part of the design, so sizing down is not automatically the best choice. Equally, sizing up does not necessarily give more room where you need it. Check the shoulder, sleeve and length information rather than only the chest measurement.

Use model information as context

A model’s height and worn size can help you judge proportions, but they do not tell you everything about the fit. Your preferred amount of room, torso length and body measurements may be different. Do not use a photograph as a substitute for a size chart.

Ask a specific question when details are missing

A useful message is: “I am considering this item. My bust measurement is X cm, and I prefer a relaxed fit. Is the listed chest measurement flat or around the garment?” Include the product name or link. Avoid guessing about stretch when fabric information is missing.
