Build a capsule wardrobe from the clothes you already own
A capsule wardrobe is a small group of clothes that combine easily. It does not need to be beige, minimal or limited to a particular number of pieces. Its purpose is to make getting dressed easier for the life you actually lead.
Start with your next seven days
Write down the situations you need to dress for: working indoors, commuting, errands, evenings out or time at home. Give the most space to the situations that happen most often. A wardrobe built mainly around occasional dinners will not help much on a busy weekday morning.
Choose the bottoms first
Pick two or three bottoms you already enjoy wearing. Try each one with several tops and your usual shoes. A top that works with only one very specific combination may still be worth keeping, but it is less useful as the centre of a flexible wardrobe.
Make a simple outfit grid
Lay out three tops and two bottoms. That creates six possible pairings, but only count the ones you would genuinely wear. Add one removable layer and check which combinations still feel comfortable. Photograph the successful outfits so you can remember them without repeating the whole exercise.
For example, a plain top might work with both a relaxed trouser and a skirt you own. A second top could bring colour, while a third gives you an option for a slightly smarter day. These are roles to fill with your own favourites, not a required shopping list.
Use colour to connect, not restrict
Choose a few colours that already repeat in your wardrobe. You might combine dark blue and cream with green, or black and grey with a bright accent. Test colours together in daylight. You do not need to replace every item that falls outside your chosen palette.
Write down gaps before buying
Be specific: “a layer that fits over both of these tops” is more useful than “more clothes”. Check care requirements and how often you can wash a piece, too. A garment you rarely have ready to wear cannot carry the whole week.
Start by repeating your three favourite combinations. When you want more variety, use our three-occasion styling guide to change the mood without rebuilding the outfit.
